At Fountain for youth we believe that the issues we address are issues that all people can embrace.
I believe we are at a crucial turning point where your support, voice and knowledge can make a substantial difference in closing the gap for some of the worlds truly neediest children – The First Australians.
I have witnessed a significant change in people’s outlook towards Indigenous Australians, especially amongst young people. Unfortunately there are still too few people that are recognising the dire need in this country to close the gap on inequality – the true emergency and urgency to face the health and education crisis that is cutting life short by some 17 years for Indigenous Australians.
We believe that education is key to how Australians and other people around the world will form a foundation for change to rectify the inequality and critical areas of need amongst Indigenous people. I do not have all the answers nor does any one person but collectively we do.
Please start your journey in any way you can, I did and it may become the most significant thing that I have done in my life. Please start this journey with our brothers and sisters – Lend your name, voice, support and your passion behind this cause and see the difference you will make.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Raise your voice and express your opinion, stand up for what you believe in. You as an individual can make the most traction in seeing a change of attitudes within Australia, it means not diverting or avoiding conversation when you feel uncomfortable when issues are raised in regards to Indigenous Australians, when you disagree or find offense in what is being said by others.
There is no place for racism and stereotyping of a people, we should all be respectful of each other’s differences and embrace the importance of culture and history, especially of our Indigenous family who can boast the only linkage to the oldest continuous living culture on this planet – this is something for all Australians to be proud of.
Learn your country’s true history timelines and the stories of the ‘First Australians’, past and present from within your own local area and beyond - education is the key for ‘all’ Australians, when we have a greater understanding of our combined history as a nation, then we can beging to move forward together.
Seek out Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations in your local area and see how you can get involved in activities in the region. Get to know Aboriginal families - did you know that less than 7% of non Indigenous Australians know any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, we can all close this gap.
Lobby your local MPs to make changes to the health, education, empolyment inequalities.
